BAKAS Renewable Energy (BREL) is a private limited company registered in 2016 under the Company Act of Nepal. The company is established to study and develop alternative energy sources for industrial and household uses. The maiden venture of the company is manufacturing biomass pellets using forest floor undergrowth, which is highly inflammable and a key triggering factor for the outbreak of forest fires. The raw material also comes from farm field biomass, sawdust and agriculture wastes. The biomass pellet production process creates employment opportunities to the local communities, largely women and disadvantaged groups of people, engaging them in collection and processing of the raw materials from the forest floor as well as farmers fields. The pellets are intended to be used by industries like brick, cement and many more industries which require energy for heating or cooling of their products. The company is developed by a group of professionals working in different sectors of renewable energy including hydropower, solar, forest and environmental management.
BREL is the first company to produce 20,000MT biomass pellets annually at industrial scale in the country. Biomass pellets are green fuel made from compressed biomass or dust that are used for burning and heating. It is a proven technology globally. The global trend of production and consumption of pellets is in increasing trend. Pellet is very popular in European countries, North America and some parts of Asia, for domestic heating, generation of electricity and outdoor uses. The fundamental of pellets being a globally popular source of energy is due to this being environment friendly and renewable in nature. Additionally, it is very easy to store and handle also.
